Who We Reach

Voices of Black Grandmothers (VOBG) is a national movement uplifting, supporting, and amplifying the voices of Black grandmothers across the United States. Our reach spans urban, suburban, and rural communities, engaging women who are caregivers, culture bearers, advocates, entrepreneurs, and leaders within their families and neighborhoods.

We serve:

• Black grandmothers ages 35–85+

• Grandmothers raising grandchildren (kinship caregivers)

• Young and “non-traditional” grandmothers

• Multigenerational families impacted by caregiving, loss, health disparities, and economic inequity

• Community partners, educators, faith leaders, artists, and advocates

Community Reach

• 42,000+ engaged members in our primary online community

• Members and supporters across all U.S. regions

• Rapid-growth engagement through live chats, storytelling spaces, and digital programming

• Strong word-of-mouth growth driven by trust and shared lived experience

Our community is not passive—it is active, vocal, and deeply connected through shared stories, advocacy, and mutual support.

Programmatic Reach

Our initiatives collectively reach thousands of individuals annually through:

1. National Black Grandmothers Day (February 7)

• A nationally recognized observance honoring Black grandmothers

• Community celebrations, educational programming, storytelling campaigns, and advocacy efforts

• Increasing national visibility through media, grassroots organizing, and partnerships

2. VOBG Cares (Nonprofit Arm)

• Support for grandmothers raising grandchildren

• Kinship care education and resources

• Intergenerational programming and caregiver advocacy

• Community-based outreach and referral support

3. Story & Legacy Museum for Black Grandmothers (Online → In-Person)

• Digital exhibits preserving personal stories, photographs, and oral histories

• Educational resources for families, schools, and researchers

• A growing archive that honors lived experience as history

• Planned expansion into physical exhibits and traveling installations

4. State & Local Chapters (Starting with Maryland)

• Community-based leadership and grassroots engagement

• Local meetings, workshops, and advocacy efforts

• A scalable chapter model designed for national expansion

Digital & Media Reach

• Podcasts, storytelling series, and digital publications

• Online exhibits and educational resources

• Social and community platforms that prioritize authentic engagement over algorithms

• Growing email lists, memberships, and on-demand resources

Our digital footprint allows us to reach homebound elders, working caregivers, and multigenerational households who may not otherwise access traditional programming.

Our reach is measured not only in size, but in depth and transformation:

• Grandmothers finding their voice after years of silence

• Families accessing support during times of crisis

• Stories preserved that would otherwise be lost

• Communities mobilized around caregiving, legacy, and cultural pride
